Thomson Causeway COE Park, Thomson, IL- Sept. 28-Oct.4, 2017

Postby Colliemom » Sat Mar 18, 2017 12:06 pm

NOTE: DATE CHANGE >There is a fall GTG being planned for Thomson Causeway COE Park, , Thomson, IL from Thursday, Sept. 28th through Wednesday, October 4th, 201. This change was made to accommodate those who are working and avoid weeked travel. Come join in and have some fall fun. This park is near Galena, IL, and on the Great River Road Scenic Byway through IL. There are places to visit, sights to see etc. and whatever else we find to get into. IA is across the river and the Great River Road begs for exploring as well. Come earlier, stay later than the dates I posted. This was originally planned for Mississippi Palisades State Park, but decided to move it to this park instead. This COE has WiFi, showers and restrooms plus electrical hookups within easy distance of sites. Sites can be reserved through http://www.recreation.gov but not till At lesst March 28th as booking window is not open that far yet. Will post my reservation when I get one made. In the meantime, check out some of the visitor photos on the link to the campground below. Camping rates vary from $14-$20.00. ADDED NOTE: Galena has a fall festival in the 30th I believe, so sites may go fast for that weekend.

Books ng window opened March 28th, so far it's

I can't make it, but Dubuque is about an hour away and it has a very nice National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. Also, when I was there last August, one of the big riverboats was spending the day there. Might be interesting before or after your GTG.

That could be great weather. However I wouldn't be able to make it till at least the next week, possibly. So if anyone decides to stay longer, let me know and I'll try.

Donna, it's hard to say what the weather will be. It could be cooler yes, but also could be nice and mild. Temps that time of year from what I have read average in the 60's and low's in the upper 40's. But the weather has been anything but average as we know. You gals have had some rather chilly weather even in FL this year. Also, the rates are running between $14.00-$20.00.

Thanks for coordinating this Sue. Thomson is a really nice place.

For those asking about weather in October or cold wind off the river, Accuweather shows high 60*s/low 70*s during the day and cooler night. Perfect temps for me. If you think wind may be too cold, the row to the right of the pond/pool that shows a river branch on the right is nice. It's a narrow/short river branch. Any bigger winds would be coming off the main river shown on the far left.

I'll keep it in mind, but I like to do my Fall vacation a little later in October. Maybe I'd do a long weekend (Thur thru Sun). We'll see. Plus time off approvals from the jerk are always iffy. I really need to retire. 8-) Thomson is close enough for me to take a ride up, but with the dates, not sure that would work for me either. Unless peeps are planning on staying over the full weekend (i.e. a Saturday).

Some things to see and do near Thomson. And of course, there's always the Prison. But don't let them catch you taking pics of it. ;)

I'm going to try to make this one. I have been there in August and will be again this August with another group. Last year I did Mississippi Palisades S.P. in either late Sept. or early October and weather was a bit rainy but temps were not bad. If I can make it, I will host a gtg at my site with pulled pork, chips and coleslaw. Bring your own beverage of choice.
Any day spent in the company of my animals is a good day.

Good link Kathy. I've been to De Immigrant Windmill and the Windmill Cultural Center (across the street from each other), the marina (just around the trail), and Heritage Canyon, but Eagle Point Park looks fun to me.

If I make this GTG, I may go to the cemetery again, to find my great grand parents graves, but I learned my lesson last time and will not drive the truck thru there. Steep / blind hills where you can't see the road!

I definitely can't even hit the latter dates now.... But might consider going here a week or so later if anyone is still in the area.

I just booked site 60 from 9/28 to 10/3. Don't forget to use your National Park Pass to save 50%. Hope to see you there!
