My dog, Roe, used to do that, only he followed it around the pool until it floated close enough to the edge to retrieve it without getting in.

That's cute, a family member has a half dozen chi mix and one of them does that among running
continuously around the pool, he'll drop the ball in on one side and race around to fetch it himself.
Dogs are so funny.
