Drew came home

I went to the cottage on Lake Huron last week, because big water always soothes me. My plan was to sit on the beach and cry as necessary, and I followed it for a day. Then Gayle pointed out that I'd been grieving for William all summer, and I'm not getting any younger . . . and she had made a lot of phone calls to locate a Border Collie for me to meet.

So we drove to the Traverse City area, found the sheep farm, and I met him. And that was that. Yes, I fell for him.

Drew is an unusual Border Collie in two ways: he prefers hanging out with people over moving sheep around, and he is actually laid-back. Well, in Border Collie terms, he is. Not desirable characteristics for a working stock dog, but great ones for a companion!

It took him about 24 hours to decide that I belong to him. His favorite place to sleep is beside my bed, and the first couple of nights he had to wake me up to pet him two or three times, just to be sure that location was all right. His favorite daytime place is under my desk, where he can put his head on my legs while I work online. He likes to read with me, as long as I keep one hand on him. Sometimes he noses my second hand onto his head as well. This makes for some difficulty turning pages, but I can't say that I really object!

We are going to have lots of fun. :D

Louise, I'm so happy to read this. Drew is absolutely beautiful - excuse me: handsome. I can tell already you're made for each other. How old is he? Have fun and let us know how you both are doing. Congratulations to you both.

Your friend definitely is a great match maker. Sounds as if Drew was out looking for a job not related to sheep and has found it with you. Lucky dog, lucky Louise.....

So glad you and Drew found each other. He is beautiful. We are border collie people. Our Hank is not laid back. There is nothing he likes more than to be able to work cattle. Harold can't talk about Semi, the dog we had before Hank, without almost crying. Everyone that ever met her loved her.

Sandi, Drew is 3 1/2. Still young enough for us to have years of fun! I think he's handsome too -- especially now that he's cleaned up. I actually took him to a groomer, something I have never done. His mats had mats, he was filthy, and he smelled like a sheep pasture. I was amazed at how much shine his coat had afterward.

Martha, I didn't know you had a Border Collie! They are perpetual motion creatures, aren't they? I'd love to meet him one day. (You too, of course! I said that backwards! )

Tonight is Drew's first time at class. I am really curious to see what he thinks of a big room full of dogs! Should be interesting.

We have had 4 Border Collies, an Australian Shepard and 2 Red Heelers. The Border Collies were Dan, Hank I, Semi and Hank II. Hank I looked like Drew and Hank II is tri colored. Harold has a habit of using the same name over and over which seems to confuse the vets. lol He had 2 or 3 Jeff's before we got married.
