Barb,
Collies shed or "throw their coat" as it's called, twice a year. That's when you need to get the bush out. Other wise a once a week grooming keeps them in good condition. It's that heavy undercoat that they shed, so they actually look thinner once it's all out. Then they start growing a new coat again.
