Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker

Postby Liz » Tue Jul 16, 2013 8:02 pm

By Jennifer Chiaverini
True story of a former slave who saved to pay for her freedom, moved to Washington DC and became a dressmaker to DC elite, Senator's wives, etc. Was recommended to Mrs. Lincoln and became her dressmaker and confidante. A fascinating glimpse into the Lincoln White House at a trying time for our country.

Hi Liz, Thanks for recommending Mrs Lincoln's Dressmaker. I took it on vacation with me. The story was excellent, explained the Civil War quite well. Such sad areas today to visit. Altho I did enjoy the story, I wasn't impressed with her writing skills.

II haven't read that one, but 10 or so years ago read a book about their relationship - written by Keckley (the former slave and dressmaker). Will keep this one in mind and pick it up also one day.
