If the night was very clear and the weather calm, we could just barely see the Tawas lighthouse with binoculars from the top of our boathouse four miles west of Port AUstin. I always wanted to go across by boat, but it would have been a long trip in a relatively small boat. My parents did it one summer by themselves and got into a sudden storm in the middle of the crossing. Had a scary time getting back home.

I miss our cottage, but after my dad died and my brother left, the upkeep was entirely up to me, so I was happy to sell it in 2001 and move my mother to a senior apartment with meals and housekeeping. My cousins have cottages in Oscoda, but I have only been there once. We had sunsets, and they have sunrises over Lake Huron.

Next May, I want to spend a month in Ontario tracking down my great-grandparents homes, so I may head west via the north shore of Superior in June or so. It would be a great trip.
