Anyone ever done the Mississippi scenic byway? Specifically through Illinois.

Depending on when I can get fall vacation approved, I'm thinking about doing this south after the Illinois GTG to Shawnee National Forest or if I can't go to the GTG, just doing it from north to south through Illinois.

Looks like one of the big attractions on the route is wineries  Does that mean I have to start drinking?

I haven't had a drink in about 20 years - came down with the condition "always-the-driver-it is". :P

I lived on the Great Mississippi River Road in Wisconsin. I know my favorite parts of it in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. I've probably driven all of it in Illinois, but my memory of that isn't as good. I drive it for the scenery, don't remember wineries, except in Galena.

Come on down to Southern Illinois for wonderful scenery, lakes and many many wineries!!! Check them out at this link. http://www.illinoiswine.com/region_south.html
About one sample glass is all I can hold so I would be happy to be the designated driver. Most places always have music on weekends and several have music more often. There is also the Scratch Brewery that is getting really good reviews. http://www.illinoiswine.com/region_south.html
This is one of my favorite wineries, love their food! http://vonjakobvineyard.com/

Saw part of the great river road yesterday with my cousin. Went to see the town where our grandmother was born. Also went to the cemetery, but Roxanne couldn't remember which hill they were buried on from her trip 26 years ago (geez her memory is getting bad  The cemetery was an experience. Rox had to get out & guide me at one point. Mar-E (the truck) was pointed straight up and the road was right on the edge of the hill and all I could see was sky & the top of trees! :o Holey Moley!. Next time we'll bring her VW bug.

Did a couple of posts if anyone is interested.
